We broke ground! Upon celebrating the official groundbreaking of our 20-bed dormitory on March 9th with the Honorable Mayor Willie Brown and over 200 guests, our contractor, Oliver & Company, got right to work. The construction site was cleared by the end of March, paving the way for foundation layout, excavation, and formwork. The framework is up, and the building is taking shape.
In keeping with LLA’s philosophy of having every student engaged in shaping school culture and community, we launched a Construction Apprenticeship Program with the Northern California Carpenters Union that runs in tandem with the construction of the dormitory. With construction continuing to be a growth industry in the Bay Area, as well as a promising source of employment, LLA students gain exposure to career pathways in this field.
We have obtained a loan from the Northern California Community Loan Fund (NCCLF) for $1.6 million to be able to complete the project in 2019. NCCLF wrote an in-depth article about LLA and the dorm project in their most recent newsletter which you can check out here.
Together, we are not just building a home, we are building healthy and successful futures for the Bay Area’s most disconnected youth.
